How to Respond to a Kitchen Leak Before Damage Spreads

A kitchen leak usually comes from the faucet, the drain basket, or the water supply lines and P-trap under the sink.

Common Leak Locations

  • Faucet Base or Spout: Worn-out O-rings, loose mounting nuts, or a cracked internal cartridge.
  • Drain Strainer: Failed plumber’s putty or a loose large nut right under the sink basin.
  • P-Trap and Pipes: Loose slip nuts, misaligned plastic connections, or split rubber washers.
  • Supply Lines: Old shut-off valves or worn gaskets on flexible water hoses.

Quick Fix Steps

  • Turn off water: Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise if the leak is from the faucet or supply lines.

  • Dry the area: Wipe all pipes and surfaces completely dry with a towel, then place dry paper towels underneath to easily spot where new water drips first.

  • Tighten loose parts: Hand-tighten slip nuts on plastic drain pipes or use pliers very gently for a quarter-turn if they drip.

  • Replace worn seals: Swap out flat rubber washers, split O-rings, or re-apply plumber’s putty under the basket strainer if tightening fails.

If you can tell me where the water is dripping from (the pipes, the faucet, or the floor of the cabinet), I can give you exact steps to fix it.
