Plumbing emergencies in Toronto can range from a burst pipe to a drain that sends sewage into a room. The key question is whether water, waste or loss of service puts people or the property at risk. Use the signs below to judge how urgent the problem may be.
Which Plumbing Problems Need Urgent Help?
Act promptly when water keeps flowing, sewage backs up or a ceiling starts to sag. First, keep people away from the affected area. Call 911 if there is an immediate threat to life. Do not enter floodwater near outlets, wiring or electrical equipment.
Burst Pipes and Active Leaks
A split pipe or failed supply hose can release water fast. Close the water shutoff only if you can reach it safely and know how to use it. Then, contact a plumber and explain whether the flow has stopped.
A small leak still needs repair, but it may not need the same response as a room that is flooding. Watch for spreading stains, pooled water or a leak that you cannot isolate. Those signs call for prompt help.
Sewage and Drain Backups
Wastewater rising through a drain or toilet needs urgent attention. Stop using the affected plumbing, and keep people and pets out of the area. Also, avoid adding drain chemicals. Tell the plumber which fixtures backed up and whether more than one room is affected.

If the whole building loses water, check with building staff or Toronto 311 for a known supply issue. A loss of flow does not by itself prove that a pipe inside your home has burst.
